Sandvik Secures $41 Million Equipment Order for Khoemacau Copper Mine Expansion in Botswana

Sandvik, the global mining solutions provider, has secured a landmark contract to supply state-of-the-art underground mining equipment for the expansion of the Khoemacau Copper Mine in Botswana. The order, valued at approximately SEK 450 million (around $41 million), was placed by JCHX Mining Management, a leading Chinese mining contractor.

This order marks a major step forward in supporting the operations of MMG Limited’s Khoemacau Copper Mining (KCM) project, one of Africa’s most important copper developments.

Details of the Equipment Order

Under the agreement, Sandvik will supply a comprehensive range of underground mining machinery, including loaders, trucks, and drilling equipment. The package also integrates Sandvik’s advanced digital monitoring and automation solutions, such as its remote monitoring service, aimed at enhancing safety, operational efficiency, and equipment uptime.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2025 and extend through the second quarter of 2026, aligning with the phased expansion of Khoemacau’s underground operations.

Strengthening Partnerships in Botswana’s Mining Sector

The deal follows JCHX Mining Management’s recent five-year underground mining contract with MMG Limited at Khoemacau. This collaboration underscores the growing role of Chinese mining contractors in Africa, as well as Sandvik’s ability to deliver world-class solutions to support large-scale mining projects.

For Botswana, this investment is particularly significant. The Khoemacau mine, located in the Kalahari Copper Belt, is central to the country’s ambitions to diversify its mining sector beyond diamonds and establish itself as a global copper producer.

Technology and Innovation at the Core

Beyond supplying heavy machinery, Sandvik’s focus on digital monitoring and automation highlights a broader industry trend toward “smart mining.” Remote monitoring services will allow real-time data collection and analysis, helping operators improve productivity, reduce downtime, and enhance workplace safety.

By combining cutting-edge technology with robust equipment, Sandvik is positioning itself as a key partner in the modernization of African mining operations.

Looking Ahead

As demand for copper continues to surge globally—driven by the green energy transition, electric vehicles, and infrastructure development—the Khoemacau expansion is strategically timed. With Sandvik’s advanced mining solutions, the project is expected to deliver higher efficiency, improved sustainability, and long-term growth opportunities for both Botswana and the global copper supply chain.
