Omaha, NE — Today, the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of State Senator John Cavanaugh in the 2026 election for the office of House of Representatives in Nebraska’s Second Congressional District.
“John Cavanaugh is the leader our community needs to fight for a healthier, cleaner, and more affordable future,” said Sharon Clawson, Chapter Political Chair. “We are confident that John Cavanaugh will fight to protect our environment and support a clean energy economy that lowers costs and creates new jobs here at home. As the Trump Administration continues to attack bedrock air and water protections, climate action, and the transition to clean energy, the Nebraska Chapter of the Sierra Club is committed to electing champions like John who will prioritize our communities and our future.”
As a state senator, Cavanaugh has been a champion for clean energy, public health, and the environment. He has helped stop bad legislation intended to slow progress on clean energy and stood up against polluters. This session he introduced the Affordable American Energy and Jobs Act LB 1186, which would establish best practices for siting renewable energy projects, promote the creation of good paying local jobs and address the vital issue of energy affordability.
“We are deeply grateful to John Cavanaugh for his support for our efforts to clean up the pollution caused by the Alt En ethanol plant as well as his support for protecting the health and wellbeing of the people of North Omaha,” said Ken Winston, Nebraska Chapter Director. “He is a true environmental champion who will fight to protect our communities and Nebraska’s natural treasures like the Ogallala Aquifer and our free flowing rivers from polluting industries.”
Along with the endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its considerable volunteer strength to John Cavanaugh’s campaign.
“We pledge to do all we can to help ensure he is elected,” added Clawson. “Scores of Sierra Club volunteers will contact and mobilize voters on his behalf and we will speak to the public as often as possible about his exemplary environmental record. We look forward to a victory for John Cavanaugh on election night and to him fighting for the environment as a U.S. Representative.”
