Everyone knew US electric car sales would be down in the 4th quarter. After the $7,500 US EV tax credit was killed, the only question was how far sales would drop. I like looking for surprises, though, and trying to find out what will happen or what happened that people didn’t expect. As I was collecting and crunching the data, something did jump out to me. A few models actually saw sales growth.
Naturally, in a market with dozens of models, that was bound to happen. Some automakers or dealers may have not done a great job informing people about the $7,500 tax credit expiring, and some may have simply not had good supply for various reasons.
So, which models somehow improved? Oh, well, before we answer that question, note that there are two ways it could be measured. We could be looking at quarter over quarter, or we could be looking at it year over year. I looked at it both ways and got slightly different answers, naturally.
Also, one final note: I am not counting models that were just introduced and would have their 4th quarter sales compared to 0 (zero). Because that distracts from the point. However, there were some models introduced in the 4th quarter, and there were several that had been introduced since the 4th quarter of 2024.
Quarter Over Quarter
- Lucid Gravity: Grew by 912 sales, from 230 to 1,142
- Lucid Air: Grew by 625 sales, from 2,563 to 3,188
- Porsche Taycan: Grew by 476 sales, from 1,196 to 1,672
- Rivian EDV: Grew by 382 sales, from 2,639 to 3,021
- Toyota BZ4X: Grew by 330 sales, from 3,015 to 3,345
- Ford E-Transit: Grew by 152 sales, from 430 to 582
- Volvo EX90: Grew by 41 sales, from 950 to 991
- Volvo EX40: Grew by 7 sales, from 183 to 190
Year Over Year
- Tesla Model Y: Grew by 6,954 sales, from 85,506 to 92,460
- Volvo EX30: Grew by 713 sales, from 229 to 942
- Brightdrop: Grew by 458 sales, from 274 to 995
- GMC Sierra EV: Grew by 448 sales, from 1,401 to 1,849
- Porsche Taycan: Grew by 319 sales, from 1,353 to 1,672
- Volvo EX90: Grew by 242 sales, from 749 to 991
- Jeep Wagoneer S: Grew by 207 sales, from 231 to 438
- Mercedes EQE: Grew by 154 sales, from 972 to 1,126
- Lucid Air:Â Grew by 89 sales, from 3,099 to 3,188
- Mercedes E-Sprinter: Grew by 97 sales, from 161 to 258
- Volkswagen ID.Buzz: Grew by 44 sales, from 1,162 to 1,206
So, progress! Just ignore the many other models that had sales declines. But, more seriously, we should look at which EV models had year-over-year sales growth in 2025. More on that soon.
To wrap up, did you notice which models were on both lists above? That would be the Lucid Air, Porsche Taycan, and the Volvo EX90.
