A couple of months ago, I covered data from the US Department of Energy showing which states had the most EV registrations. Naturally, the leaders were the largest, most populous states. So, that doesn’t show us which states are leading on a per capita basis.
A reader, “john smith,” was keen to point that out and to also do the work of figuring out the per capita leaders! Here are the results:
- California: 26.8%
- Colorado: 25.5%
- Washington: 24.6%
- District of Columbia: 20.4%
- Oregon: 17.0%
- New Jersey: 15.6%
- Hawaii: 14.1%
- Vermont: 13.7%
- Maryland: 13.2%
- Nevada: 13.1%
- Massachusetts: 12.3%
- Delaware: 11.9%
- Connecticut: 11.2%
- Virginia: 10.1%
“California is still in first place, but Florida and Texas don’t even crack 10%,” he added.
Indeed, California is still the leader! Interestingly, Colorado, which has also had strong EV buyer incentives for years, is right on California’s tail, and Washington (also having had incentives for years) is right on Colorado’s tail.
What is interesting as well, and highlighted by John, is that there were already 13 states and DC with more than 10% of auto sales being electric!
Now, there’s a key point to note here. The EV registration data only went through the end of 2023…. So, we lack all of 2024’s EV sales, as well as sales from the beginning of 2025 of course. So, the ranking must have shifted a bit, and EV share probably climbed in most of those states — almost certainly did. There are probably other states with more than 10% EV share now too.
If you live in any of these states, are you surprised with the results? Did you already know where your state stood?
As a Floridian, I have to say that I’m quite disappointed. Also, I do hope the state has broken the 10% barrier by now. I see electric vehicles constantly, and the number of non-Tesla electric cars, SUVs, and trucks on the road has definitely surged in the past year or so. However, I live in just one tiny pocket of the state of course, so I don’t know how much of that is just happening around here versus statewide. Overall, though, I only see positive signs on the road, so I am optimistic EV share has risen strongly in the Sunshine State.
