Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy Charts Revival Path for Salem Steel Plant: Focus on Profitability, Speciality Steel, and Green Growth
In a decisive move towards strengthening India’s steel sector, Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, undertook an official review visit to the Salem Steel Plant, a crucial unit under the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). The visit aimed to assess operational efficiency, chart a profitability roadmap, and align the plant’s vision with national targets of 300 million tonnes of steel production by 2030 and Net Zero emissions by 2070.
Upon arrival, the Minister was received with a Guard of Honour and participated in a tree plantation ceremony, underlining the government’s focus on sustainable industrial development.
A Strategic Asset in India’s Steel Growth
“Steel is not just a material, it is the backbone of national development. From infrastructure to innovation, our goal is growth with responsibility,” stated the Minister during his address.
Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a global steel leader, Shri Kumaraswamy emphasized Salem’s potential to become a flagship producer of speciality and stainless steels, essential for high-tech sectors such as defence, railways, aerospace, and precision manufacturing.
Witnessing the Full Steelmaking Cycle
During his detailed plant tour, the Minister observed the entire scrap-to-steel transformation, including visits to:
-
Scrapyard
-
Steel Melting Shop
-
Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)
-
Slab Caster
-
Cold Rolling Mill
Advanced machinery such as the Torch Cutting Machine and rolling mills showcased the plant’s technological strength and its contribution to India’s industrial ecosystem.
The Electric Arc Furnace at Salem enables cleaner steelmaking, aligning with India’s decarbonisation agenda. The Cold Rolling Mill produces high-grade stainless steel used in a wide array of applications including:
-
Pipes and tubes
-
Railway wagons
-
Bridge construction
-
Submersible pump parts
-
Coin blanks
-
SS roofing sheets
-
Domestic LPG cylinders
“The finished products from Salem Steel touch every Indian’s life – from homes to railways to defence,” remarked the Minister.
Review Meeting on Profitability and Modernisation
A high-level review chaired by Shri Kumaraswamy along with the CMD of SAIL, JS Steel, and ED of the Salem Plant, focused on strategic interventions for turning the unit into a high-capacity, profitable enterprise.
Key points discussed included:
-
Enhancing capacity utilisation
-
Finalising a market-driven product mix
-
Boosting speciality steel production
-
Transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar and wind
-
Streamlining operational bottlenecks
“We are committed to revitalising this strategic asset. Speciality steel is the future, and Salem Steel can lead in quality and cost-efficiency through green energy and full capacity use,” said the Minister.
Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat Goals
The visit aligns with the broader vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, aiming to reduce India’s reliance on steel imports and strengthen its domestic capabilities. By contributing to high-value steel production, Salem Steel Plant can play a central role in India’s goal of becoming a self-reliant, globally competitive industrial nation.
Minister Kumaraswamy also met with labour union representatives, ensuring that employee welfare and concerns remain part of the plant’s transformation journey.
The Salem Steel Plant’s transformation into a hub for high-grade stainless and speciality steel is a significant step toward achieving India’s steel production ambitions. With strong leadership, strategic investment, and a focus on green, innovative, and inclusive growth, the plant is poised to become a pillar in India’s march towards Viksit Bharat by 2047.
This visit reinforces the Government of India’s commitment to reviving legacy assets, supporting technological advancement, and ensuring India’s leadership in sustainable steelmaking on the global stage.
