Union Minister Shri Satish Chandra Dubey Visits SECL; Flags Off Projects to Boost Sustainable Coal Mining

Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Shri Satish Chandra Dubey, completed a two-day official visit to South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) from June 30 to July 1, 2025, focusing on strengthening coal production, promoting sustainability, and recognizing workforce contributions.

As part of the visit, the Minister reviewed key operations at SECL’s Dipka and Churcha underground (UG) mines and inaugurated a series of vital technological and welfare-oriented initiatives aimed at boosting safety, inclusiveness, and efficiency in India’s coal sector.

Technological Advancements in Underground Mining

The Minister virtually flagged off a state-of-the-art low-height Continuous Miner machine at the NCPH underground mine in the Chirimiri Area. This advanced machinery is designed to significantly improve productivity and safety in underground coal operations.

Shri Dubey emphasized, “The coal sector plays a crucial role in building Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership, coal shortages are history. With technologies like Continuous Miner, our aim is to raise underground coal production to 100 million tonnes by 2030.”

He praised SECL’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge mining methods and encouraged faster rollout of such innovations across India.

Infrastructure & Safety Initiatives

At Churcha UG Mine in the Baikunthpur Area, the Minister inaugurated a Main Mechanical Ventilator (MMV) to enhance air quality and ensure the safety of underground workers. He also inaugurated bio-toilets at the mine site, underlining the Ministry’s support for improving workplace infrastructure and hygiene, particularly for women workers.

Focus on Environment & Social Responsibility

Demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, Shri Dubey participated in a tree plantation drive under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign at both Churcha and Dipka mines. The initiative links environmental awareness to emotional responsibility, encouraging each citizen to plant at least one tree in honor of their mother.

He also took part in a foundation stone-laying ceremony for a new entrance gate and security complex at SECL’s Dipka Area and reviewed key operational metrics at the Dipka View Point through a detailed presentation.

Community Engagement and Employee Recognition

Shri Dubey felicitated exemplary SECL employees, including women and contract workers, acknowledging their dedication and contribution to India’s coal mission. He also visited contract workers’ camps to interact with the workforce and assess their welfare and living conditions.

He commended SECL’s CSR program, especially ‘SECL Ki Dhadkan’, a life-saving initiative that funds critical heart surgeries for children, and other welfare activities that reflect the company’s commitment to inclusive growth.

Meeting with Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh

During his visit, Shri Dubey paid a courtesy call on Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai in Raipur. The two leaders held discussions on expediting land acquisition and rehabilitation efforts to facilitate the smooth expansion of coal projects in the state.

Leadership Presence

SECL CMD Shri Harish Duhan, Functional Directors, CVO, and other senior officials accompanied the Minister throughout the tour, offering insights into ongoing operations, innovations, and future planning in the region.

Minister Satish Chandra Dubey’s visit reinforces the Centre’s focus on enhancing coal production through technology, ensuring miner welfare, and promoting sustainability. As SECL continues to play a pivotal role in India’s energy security, initiatives unveiled during the visit are expected to significantly contribute to achieving self-reliance and eco-conscious mining practices.
