Waymo Grows Again – CleanTechnica

Waymo continues to grow, and grow, and grow. The company just expanded its robotaxi services into more California cities. The company is offering rides in more areas of the Bay Area this week, and will be offering rides in more areas of the Los Angeles metro area next week.

As the short video above shows, Waymo is extending into South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, Brisbane, and Menlo Park this week, and into Silverlake, Inglewood, and Downtown LA next week. To be honest, I initially thought it was just a minor expansion, but looking at the map visuals, this is a BIG expansion. Expect Waymo to be logging a lot more rides soon. And are there exponential benefits to that? Does that mean Waymo will be able to expand even much more soon? We’ll see.

Waymo also recently shared that it’s preparing for its launch alongside Uber in Atlanta, which is happening this summer.

Further, Waymo has been on a big road trip across the USA, and it recently shared updates on where it was stopping, including San Antonio and Houston, Texas, and Orlando, Florida.

Waymo is truly on a roll, and it’s impressive to see after such slow growth for so long how quickly the company is growing and expanding in more and more places.

Is Tesla finally going to get into the game as well, starting in Austin, Texas? Who knows? The launch that was supposed to happen this past week has been delayed. Why? Who knows? As Steve Hanley wrote earlier today, various concerns remain. Even if Tesla does launch robotaxi service in Austin, how much and how fast could it actually expand such robotaxi service? Who knows?

I actually wasn’t going to even bring Tesla into this, but I accidentally opened the following tweet right next to the Waymo ones:

That was from October 2016, nearly 9 years ago! The following is the full tweet thread from that, implying that Tesla robotaxis were nearly ready to deploy:

Personally, I think Waymo robotaxis do look pretty, especially the coming Zeekr and Hyundai IONIQ 5 models.
