Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) recently commissioned an XCMG XE4000 excavator, it says marking another step forward in strengthening its operational capabilities. GMC stated: “As we continue our commitment to responsible and sustainable mining, investing in reliable, high-performance equipment remains essential to delivering safe, efficient, and productive operations. The addition of the XE4000 enhances our fleet, supporting improved performance and greater productivity across our sites.”
GMC is the only manganese producer and exporter in Ghana. The company is a privately-owned mining company (Consolidated Minerals Africa Led 90% and Government of Ghana 10%). Consolidated Minerals is controlled by China’s Ningxia Tianyuan Manganese Industry.
The 400 t class XCMG XE4000 features a 22 m³ ultra-large bucket capacity, maximum digging depth of 8 m and up to 40 t of ore loaded in a single bucket.
GMC holds a mining concession for manganese over an area of 170 square kilometres in and around Nsuta in the Western Region of Ghana, less than 3% of which has been mined to date. Nsuta is known for its unique high-grade carbonate ore, which is considered to have one of the highest manganese-to-iron ration ores in the market (Mn: Fe-31) and is low in phosphorus, alumina, and other heavy metal impurities, making it well-suited for both alloy and manganese metal production. There are three existing pits in total (Pits A, B, and C) with operations currently active in Pit C.
The XE4000 is just the latest addition from XCMG – as the mine is already very experienced in operating a large fleet of XE3000 machines. In 2025, GMC took delivery of seven XE3000 machines, with the overall equipment operability rate consistently maintained above 95%, according to XCMG.
XCMG states: “Since the equipment was put into operation, facing the harsh conditions of Africa’s high-temperature, humid, and dusty mines, seven XE3000 units have maintained stable availability, providing solid equipment support for uninterrupted continuous mining in the mining area. In less than 10 months of operation, a single piece of equipment has accumulated over 5,000 hours of operation, proving XCMG’s robust and durable quality through long-term continuous operation.”
The 300 t class The XE3000 is equipped with a 1,193 kW high-power engine and an advanced hydraulic system, delivering strong power output and precise control; The backhoe comes standard with a 15 m³ extra-large bucket capacity, with a single-bucket excavation capacity exceeding 30 t. The XE4000 has a Cummins QSK60C engine and the XE3000 a Cummins QSK50.
GMC is not just working with XCMG in terms of Chinese OEMs – it has a large fleet of SANY SET150S hybrid mining trucks which are equipped with a multi-power hybrid system – two Weichai WP17 engines plus a 148 kWh battery – delivering 1,400 kW of total output, about 15% higher than comparable models.
The hybrid trucks combine advanced diesel-electric hybrid technology with intelligent energy-management systems and regenerative braking. Early results show fuel savings of over 14%, translating directly into reduced greenhouse-gas emissions and significant cost efficiencies.
