Chinese mining equipment major XCMG has officially unveiled the XES55 ultra-class electric rope shovel during the XCMG International Customer Festival this week in Xuzhou, it says marking another major breakthrough for China’s high-end open-pit mining equipment industry.
Following the launch of the XES35 in 2023, the introduction of the XES55 demonstrates XCMG’s continued expansion into the global market for ultra-large mining excavation equipment.

Designed for large-scale open-pit coal, iron ore, and non-ferrous metal mining operations, the XES55 features a nominal 55 m³ bucket capacity and XCMG says is intended for high-efficiency loading applications under demanding mining conditions. The machine adopts an electric drive system and incorporates advanced intelligent control technologies aimed at improving productivity, reducing energy consumption, and enhancing operational reliability.
With its 55 m³ class payload capability, the XES55 is designed to match 290-360 t class haul trucks and can achieve single-pass loading efficiencies suitable for large copper, iron ore, and coal mining operations worldwide.
In terms of international market positioning, XCMG says the XES55 is generally considered comparable to the Komatsu P&H 4100XPC electric rope shovel or Cat 7495 electric rope shovel. Both models belong to the global mainstream 55 m³ ultra-class electric shovel category that is widely used in large open-pit mines.
The launch of the XES55 highlights XCMG says its growing capability in the development of ultra-large mining equipment “and further strengthens its product portfolio covering mining trucks, hydraulic excavators, electric rope shovels, and new-energy mining solutions.”
XCMG adds: “Industry observers believe the release of the XES55 represents an important step in breaking the long-standing dominance of North American OEMs in the ultra-class electric shovel market. As global mining operations continue moving toward larger-scale, low-carbon, and intelligent production systems, the XES55 is expected to attract attention from major mining projects across South America, Australia, Central Asia, and other international mining regions.”
That said, XCMG is not the only Chinese player in this space, with Taiyuan Heavy Industry (TYHI) already a long established supplier, and having its own 55 m³ model – the WK-55 – which has been widely used in China but has also been successfully exported, including to Anglo Platinum (now Valterra Platinum)’s Mogalakwena platinum mine in South Africa and BHP’s Cerro Colorado copper mine in Chile.
TYHI also offers smaller and larger sizes from the WK-55 including the WK-4D/WK-12C/WK-20/WK-27A/WK-35/WK-75 – the WK-75 with a 75 m³ bucket being the largest rope shovel ever made (even larger than the Komatsu P&H 4800XPC with a bucket capacity up to 70 m³) but with only one unit at Inner Mongolia Datang Xilinhaote Coal Mine.
